Phil Sargent Wood Turning
I became very interested in Wood turning before I retired. One of my grand Daughter was turning in Junior high school. I looked interesting so we bought a small lathe and started playing around. Next, I bought a larger lathe to turn bowls and vessels.
Soon after I join the Nor Cal Wood turners Association in 2001. I served on the board of directors for two years. I have been a mentor thru the association for the past 15 years.
I have a small studio in my garage where I can control the dust and the temperature. I am on my 4th lathe. I now use a Robust Sweet 16. Along with various hand tools to turn my pieces. I have a Beall Buffing system, Which I find the most natural way to enhance the grain and color of the wood without altering it. Often the wood will determine the character of the piece and I just follow its lead. My wood all comes from trees that have either fallen or had to be taken down so the wood is not wasted.
I attend educational symposiums when I can. Where different woodturners from all over the world come to show us new skills.
The art and craft of woodturning is and old art form. It is danger of being lost to the current generation. Volunteers form the Association provide demonstrations at schools around the area. We also mentor new members and encourage those who would like to try.
I have found Wood Turning to be a great hobby. It is full of creativity and learning. It is something that can be done into your older years.
My newest pieces are small boxes. Some as small as 4 inches. It takes precises work and time. But I have made pieces from Wall hangings to small boxes. And I learn something every time.
I am a member of Placer Arts and enjoy meeting and chatting with people on the tour.
I am showing my work at Noel Flynn Gallery, 404 Vernon Street Roseville Ca 95678
