About

Don Scott, an accomplished fine art oil painter and pencil/charcoal artist based in California’s Sierra Nevada, has built a reputation for capturing the essence of people and animals in his work. His artistry centers around portraying horses and children, subjects that allow him to depict honesty and sensitivity while highlighting the unique traits that define them.

From an early age, Don’s passion for art was nurtured by his grandfather, who often painted landscapes in the garage. Inspired by these moments, Don spent much of his childhood sketching from nature and poring over art books. His love for art eventually led him to pursue formal studies at Sacramento State University, where he graduated with a double major in fine art and graphic design in 1990. He then balanced a career as a full-time graphic designer with portraiture work on the side. In 1998, Don transitioned to a teaching career, where he found a new passion for education while continuing his artistic pursuits. Now retired as of June 2024, Don dedicates most of his time to his craft.

Don’s unique artistic style is deeply influenced by his upbringing. With a veterinarian stepfather, a pastor father, and a special education teacher mother, he was raised amidst a rich tapestry of animals, nature, and diverse people. This environment instilled in him an appreciation for the subtle details that make each subject special. His goal is to unveil the deeper personality of his subjects, capturing more than what meets the eye.

Clients consistently praise Don’s ability to breathe life into his subjects, describing his work as both lifelike and dynamic. His portraits are often celebrated for capturing the essence and soul of the individuals and animals he depicts.
