I saw my first encaustic painting in 2001, in a gallery on R Street. I wanted to touch it- but I didn’t. When I asked the gallery attendant what ‘encaustic’ was, she didn’t know. So I looked it up online. Joanne Mattera had just published “The Art of Encaustic Painting” and because I could find no one else to do it, I taught myself. And then I taught others. Many students later, many many paintings on, I am still enthralled, still reaching, still surprised!
