Detailed Information

Rick fell in love with color in kindergarten while doing finger painting. Art has been a part of his life ever since. He works mostly with oil, using primarily brush and painting knife. He seeks bold color in his paintings, exploring the relationship between the underlying hues and the form of the subject. Whether working in the studio or en plein air the subjects dictate their treatment. This means allowing the painting to develop out of the landscape or objects rather than imposing a “style” which molds the subject to conformity. This is evident in the individuality of each piece when finished.

He seeks to make paintings compelling. His goal is to provide the viewer a glimpse of a world where one’s imagination is free to interpret what they are seeing based on personal experience and free association.Beyond his formal art training, his years of painting have been influenced by the training of two fine artists. George Allen Durkee, author of Expressive Oil Painting (North Light Publishing) has been his mentor. He was also trained by Kristen OlsonStone, resident artist at Gumps, San Francisco, and resident artist atTommy Bahama, Newport Beach. He has participated in the Echo Art Shows in Saratoga, MONCA in Chico, The Arsenal in San Jose, Auburn Art Walks, and Placer Art Studio Tours, Newcastle Studio Tour, Auburn City Hall, Umpqua Bank, Cooper Garrod Winery in Saratoga, Town Hall Arts in Copperopolis, Gomez Gallery in Auburn, The Gallery In Murphys, Newcastle Packing Shed Gallery, Blue Line Gallery and numerous other venues across the United States.
