Ann Ranlett, MSA is an artist and illustrator specializing in pet/animal portraits and nature subjects rendered in scratchboard. She accepts commissions for pet and animal portraits and enjoys working with devoted owners and their beloved animals. Ann is also a photographer – looking for unique perspectives of the natural world, and using mainly her own photos for art references.
A graduate of CSU, Sacramento, with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Ann is a Master member (MSA) of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA), an Associate With Distinction member American Women Artists, and an Associate Member of the Society of Animal Artists. Ann’s art has won awards, and is recognized, at national and international levels. Four of her drawings have received Open division “Awards of Excellence” in past ISSA Exhibitions; “Safety” received a “Silver Award” in the Master division in 2017, and “Let’s Go!” received the “Gold Award” in the master division in 2018.
In 2015, her scratchboard drawing of a Boston terrier was licensed for use as a decal option on Suzuki Alto cars in Japan. Ann was one of the featured artists in the Fine Art Exhibit building for 3 days during the run of the 2015 California State Fair, and 2 days during the 2016 State Fair, where she demonstrated scratchboard. Her scratchboard works received awards in the State Fair Fine Art Exhibition in 2017, 2015 & 2014. Each year, Sacramento Zoo staff commissions Ann’s pen & ink drawings on ostrich eggs for awards and gifts. She is honored that one of those eggs is in the collection of actress Betty White.
Ann also teaches scratchboard workshops and was a featured presenter at the 2012 – 2014 & 2018 – 2019 ISSA events. In 2020, Ann was invited to join the Ampersand Art Ambassador program, The Ambassadors are a select group of artists and instructors who represent Ampersand Art Supply. Ann and her husband (also a biologist), live in rural Newcastle, California, where they’ve landscaped with an emphasis on native plants and wildlife habitat.
