I have been creating ceramic art for many years. I started out with a live model sculpture class, fell in love with the clay, then I enrolled in a ceramic class at City College in San Francisco. At that time, they had many levels of classes, and I could take several of them many, many times. This was a wonderful experience because the teachers were great, the studios had many types of kilns and glaze types AND the classes were held at Fort Mason – one of the most beautiful places in the world…fifteen years later, I was ready to move on.
I always considered my art sculptural but functional. I created vases, platters and bowls, most of them one of a kind. My mantra was and is now,” form, texture and size.”
I moved to Placer County 5 years ago, I now have my own ceramic studio with kiln etc. I decided to take some classes at Sierra College, one of the teachers challenged the students to make 4 projects for the semester – I chose something really different for me – SCULPTURE. Well, that was a life changing class!
My first project was a totem, then a table sculpture I call the spider, a sphere I call the Easter Egg, and a Barbara Hempworth type sculpture for my garden. I was hooked. I’ve made several more totems, a composite female figure I call Crazy head, and now I’m doing wall art.
The only thing that’s holding me back is the size of my kiln.
