About

The Work of Art program is a vibrant, progressive venture where people of all abilities and interests can work side-by-side to discover their artistic voice. Work of Art has just begun the process of opening our four studios to the public. Work of Art is a subsidiary of Southside Unlimited, a 501c3 non-profit that creates opportunities for artistic expression, personal progress, and active citizenship for adults with developmental disabilities. At Work of Art, we believe art is fueled by play, exploration, and curiosity. Instructors cater instruction level to the skill level and artistic vision of their students. They draw on their rigorous academic training to demystify the art-making process and break down complex techniques into easily manageable steps. We believe in every person’s ability to express themselves artistically, and encourage and nurture the creative journey of every artist we have the privilege to work with.

CERAMICS
The ceramics studio is equipped with a hire-fire electric kiln and two pottery wheels. We have a large space for working on projects, a wedging table, and a slab roller. We teach both wheel throwing and hand-building, as well as a variety of glazing techniques. We encourage exploration and offer a variety of different tools and methods so that every artist in the studio can realize their own unique artistic vision.

DRAWING AND PAINTING
The drawing and painting studio focuses on a variety of 2D techniques and media including graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, watercolor, and acrylic paints. The techniques practiced include: life drawing, Plein Air, landscape painting, sequential art, illustration and abstract expression. The drawing and painting studio encourages open exploration of individual imagination and interests to create unique pieces of art.

MIXED MEDIA
Our mixed media studio offers a variety of materials and techniques to experiment with including collage, assemblage, knitting, sewing, felting, jewelry making, natural dyes, shibori, paper-making, paper quilling, paper-mache, and other sculptural techniques. This is a very open and free-form studio, bring your imagination and come see what you can create!
