About

My longtime interest in abstract color compositions help me take note of the quiltlike patterns of aerial landscapes, especially in The Sacramento Valley with its vast expansion of fields, rivers and water channels seen from the air.
Large circle fields created by irrigation systems along the Columbia River and in the Mid-West attracted my attention as well. Aerial landscapes have been the main theme of my work for many years. A book titled “Colorfields” documents my pioneering aerial Sacramento Valley paintings.
My media are oils or acrylics on canvas and mixed media on paper, which is usually a combination of oil pastels and acrylic inks or watercolors.
My award winning work has been widely collected in the U.S and in Europe for public, corporate, medical and residential venues. It has also been selected for the prestigious Crocker Art Museum’s Annual Juried Auction on a regular basis.
Since 1984, we live and work in rural Loomis where our home and studios overlook Folsom Lake. After retiring as a Dean from Sierra College James has devoted his time to photography. We have opened our studios for the Placer Artists Studios tours for many years as well as the Art Studio Trek.
Our studios are open by appointment via my website: ibexfineart.com or (916) 652-4536
